Bowled over by Balenciaga
In my second year at Massey University, we had a fabulous design class. Our teacher, the lovely and talented Annie Ward, tasked us with using a famous designer to inspire us to design winter coats. We drew a designer’s name from a hat and then off we went to research the designer and to begin sketching. I was blessed with pulling the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. I filled my workbook with examples of his delicious designs and then sketched my designs. Throughout this month, I’ll add some of these rough workbook pages and sketches on the Duelling Designs Instagram account @duellingdesigns. Although we normally would take the designs from design through to construction on this occasion, the class only had the opportunity to do the patternmaking and make a final toile/muslin. I was disappointed that we ran out of time to make one of the Balenciaga inspired coat designs out of the final fabric. I knew that one day I would make the finished coat and I just might for this month’s challenge.
Above are two of my favourite of these designs I created for my design class. My theme for the designs was ‘Volume’ as I became obsessed with the fabulously voluptuous coats that Balenciaga designed. As I am trying to use fabrics from my stash for these challenges, I would have to change the colours of the designs from the blue/green wool combination to a combination I have in my fabric stash.
Two Part Voting
For this month’s design challenge you will have two opportunities to vote. The first week you will be able to choose one of these two designs as your favourite. For the second week of voting, I will design a third design. Why you might ask. First of all these two designs are quite similar, and I usually like to make the two designs you can vote for completely different. And Secondly, I am curious to see if my design school coat or one I designed years later will be your favourite. So stayed tuned next week to see if your favourite Balenciaga inspired coat won and which new design it will go head-to-head with in this month’s Duelling Designs’ design challenge. Votes will be totalled from here on the blog, on social media and on my LIVE Periscope broadcasts.
